With its minimal length, it is optimized to hang from a harness (e.g., the matching Falk Harness) or be secured tightly to a backpack, and is primarily used as a safety tool for self-arrest and support on steep, open snowfields or glaciers. The aluminum shaft combined with the hardened steel head provides the necessary strength and bite where needed, while keeping the weight to an absolute minimum.
